My coworkers were watching America’s Got Talent and I caught this. This contestant is super talented and I loved this audition.
When they came on screen I immediately said, “Watch how television doesn’t know how to handle a queer person of color. Watch them fall back on the scripts and tropes of gayness they understand to try and identify him.” Kind of like they did with that performer on So You Think You Can Dance.
“You’re like this generation’s Liberace.”
”Faaaabulous.”
“You’re a strange one…you’re going to polarize audiences.”Whatever, fuck the coded language, this is talent, this is queerness, this is a person of color.
